Your Body Knows
One of the most important things I remember hearing Bob Greene say while listening to his Make the Connection audiobook way back in February 1997 (the night before I began writing in my first-ever journal) was that our body represents our life. He encouraged us to stand naked in a full-length mirror to see what our body was telling us:
“You could be better. You could be worse,” he said. “But your body, right now, represents your life.”
Talk about blowing the lid off denial!
Some eighteen years later, I still trust Bob’s philosophy; however, I’ve learned that instead of seeing ourselves as we really are, we see ourselves through the lenses of our Dominant Emotional Archetype, either the Parent, the Child, the Adult.
The Parent Archetype, or what I often refer to in women as “Mother Energy” feels that spending too much time in the mirror is superficial. If she does eat well and exercise, it is simply for the purpose of living longer and staying healthy so they can take care of their loved ones. Most often numb, living only from the neck up, the Parent Archetype is disconnected from their physicality . . . and sexuality.
Those who embody the Child Archetype, or “Daughter Energy” have a very different relationship with their body than the Parent Archetype. The Child Archetype is so emotional that they either rebel completely against their body or obsessively think about making aesthetic improvements. The even bigger trouble with the Child Archetype is that nothing is ever middle of the road for them: Binging or abstinence! Marathons or coach potato! This archetype is all about extremes!
Those who embody the Adult Archetype, or “Woman Energy”, on the other hand, are connected to their body in a deeply physical, spiritual, and sensual way. With a healthy self-image and desire to take care of themselves (and others), these individuals focus on listening to and trusting the messages their body gives them. They realize their body is not who they are but rather is the container that houses their spirit. Without a strong and healthy body, nothing else in their lives can work as well, either.
Your body is your truth barometer. If you are having trouble feeling your body’s messages, I want you to begin by asking yourself some basic questions that can help you becoming more mindful:
Can you feel when you are hungry, or are you always munching? Do you feel when you are full, or do you tend to eat until it hurts? Can you sense when you are tired, and do you wake up when you’ve had enough sleep? Do you feel sexual urges and desires? Are you able to orgasm easily? Do you cry when you are sad? Do you laugh often throughout your day? Can you breathe easily and deeply?
Your body is your closest trustworthy instrument—your best friend: you’ll want to start listening to it because it is your most important tool for staying vibrant, healthy, happy, strong, and empowered. One of the easiest ways to know what your body needs is to ask yourself this question each and every morning, “What would a day of Radical Self-Love look like?”
Your own inner wisdom knows exactly what you need: more sleep, less stress, more play, less junk food, more love, less suffering, etc.
Listen to yourself. Trust yourself. And love yourself! #WomanEnergy #SimplyWoman
