Why Women Have A Hard Time Slowing Down

In a world that is extremely fast paced, we go around with our to-do lists and fill up our schedules with all that we believe we have to do. We barely have time for ourselves and instead of feeling happy, we feel tired and depleted!
All too often women work really hard. They strive toward their goals, they push themselves to accomplish their tasks and they sacrifice their needs-wants-desires because they make everyone a priority.
Maybe we’ve witnessed our mothers work really hard, barely stopping to eat, if at all.
Maybe we believe that relaxing and doing nothing means we are being lazy.
Maybe we feel we need to control our lives because if we stop to be with ourselves, we might have to face what we’ve been avoiding—ourselves!
As women, we tend to be in our heads trying to “figure things out” and we have a hard time slowing down. Because our EGO does a pretty good job of distracting us from the present moment, by overthinking, analyzing and doing things.
We are rarely in the present moment—we are either in the past or in the future making plans.
We also learned from our mothers and our foremothers to work really hard. But just because it’s “normal”, doesn’t mean, it’s the only way or the right way for women.
Working hard served our mothers and our foremothers. They had to survive the patriarchy culture. But times are changing and the return of the feminine is on the rise.
Self-care was not something our mothers modelled and we developed a belief that we are supposed to be superwoman.
It might seem selfish to nurture ourselves, but working hard, pushing and striving, is very unnatural for women. It’s a very masculine way in which we operate from our heads. We feel disconnected from our bodies, our cycles and our intuition.
In Ezzie Spencer’s book Lunar Abundance she writes, within our bodies we have the circadian rhythm and cycles of our immune, endocrine, and nervous systems.
When women slow down, we are in our hearts and in a place of receptivity. The feminine way is effortless, there is a flow and life is almost magical!
To break the cycle, we must make new choices and take new actions and by doing so, we’re saying YES to becoming more of who we are meant to be—we’re no longer burdened by our mother’s and foremother’s beliefs.
6 ways to slow down
Slowing down doesn’t mean we have to drop everything and meditate all day. It means honoring our bodies rhythms and cycles.
If you’re:
- feeling tired, take a nap;
- feeling anxious, go for a walk in nature;
- feeling stressed, run a bath;
- feeling overwhelmed, take a few deep breaths from the centre of your belly;
- hungry, prepare a nice meal, use chinaware and sit down to eat;
- overthinking, listen to music or meditate.
All of the above ways to slow down, can take as little as 10 minutes, to as long as 30 minutes.
When women slow down, we reconnect to our inner wisdom and we regain our centre so we feel whole and healthy.
For best results, make it a distraction-free time—no smartphone or family interruptions because you’re spending quality time with the most important person—YOU!
