My Why
By Kamissa Guindo
Born in France from immigrant parents, my destiny was already written by them. Go to school, learn how to cook, and take care of the house until someone I do not know comes and asks for my hand in marriage.
Friends of the family asking me nonstop when I will get married. Getting reminded by my mum at every birthday that I am still single, and that I should start to think about marriage.
But why? Is this the ultimate goal in life? Getting married and having children.
I do not see the point. Especially when I see people who follow the path of doing what they are supposed to do, being so miserable. Women are treated poorly, with no voice and no purpose except to give pleasure to men.
Why am I here if I am not allowed to do anything? Why am I here if every single decision about my life is delegated to men? Why should I want to live if I am not living at all?
Living on my own terms is My Why.
Seeing my mum not able to go out without my father’s approval. He forbade her several times to come home when she disobeyed or beat her when she stood up for herself—swearing to myself that I would never allow him to touch her again in my presence.
I kept my promise. I came between the two of them one day when he tried to beat her again. This time he redirected his anger at me and I defended myself.
Standing up for women and children became My Why.
Being told by my mum several times that if she was still with my father, it was because of us. Since the age of 10, one of my dreams is for them to get a divorce. I am still dreaming. Now that we are all adults, she is waiting for her payback for all her
suffering. She is hoping to receive at his death a house he built.
Women should not stay in toxic relationships for money. And they should stop using their children as an excuse for their unhappiness and lack of success.
Helping women become financially independent is My Why.
Being unable to rent a home or find a respectable job because of people with preconceived ideas of who I am as a member of a minority group.
My financial independence became My Why.
Having the right to live and enjoy life as a woman without other people’s approval is My Why.
Living my life is my birthright. Helping women live a fulfilled and joyful life and recognize this birthright is My Why.
