Light Your Fire
Isn’t it time to ask your Self, with a clear head and open eyes: What lights my fire? What do I most want to feel, experience, become? What kind of legacy do I want to leave?
Now, I understand that you probably have a mortgage, a car payment, and/or a few mouths to feed, and that the notion of abandoning your day job in the hopes of playing baseball in the MLB or dancing on Broadway seems far-fetched. This’s not what I’m suggesting. But passion is the oil for your internal fire; it’s what creates the Light inside of you that nobody else can put out.
It reminds me of the little Sunday school song I learned as a child: “This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine!”
The Light is driven by your deepest desires (that you are not only permitted, but mandated, to pursue)! It is what expands collective consciousness!
You need to ask yourself what brings you the kind of passion that fills you with expansive joy, peace, and pleasure. It’s time to allow yourself to enjoy what lights your inner fire. It’s time to tell your Self the truth!
If you don’t know the answers to these questions, don’t fret. You aren’t alone. Most people don’t take the time to reflect on these most important questions. But happiness is a reflection of our self-awareness—of how closely we are aligned with our true authentic Self.
Your Light is flamed when you trust, listen to, and believe in your Self.
Don’t worry about which is the highest income-producing career, or if returning to school will leave you in debt for years. If it lights you up, move in that direction. If it drains your life force, move away. Trust your internal GPS—red light, yellow light, green light. And don’t worry if going for the gusto feels overwhelming at first: start with small acts of courage.
When we get in the way of our passion, we are guaranteed tough times. When we follow our hearts, even if tough times come (and they will), we will have the energy, focus, and optimism to see them through. The truth will set us free! Follow your light like a beacon!
How can you determine what creates light in your life?
First and foremost, look at what you love to do for enjoyment! You will be amazed at the opportunities that come your way when you are open and vocal about your passions and desires.
Empowerment is your birthright! We were designed to expand our lives! To follow what “lights” us up and to let our “inner light” expand into the brightest, happiest, most empowered version of ourselves possible.
In fact, science tells us that we live in an infinite, ever-expanding universe and that we are a part of that universe. Steven Hawking explains it in A Brief History of Time:
The discovery that the universe is expanding was one of the greatest intellectual revolutions of the twentieth century. With hindsight, it is easy to wonder why no one had thought of it before. Newton, and others, should have realized that a static universe would soon start to contract under gravity. But suppose instead that the universe is expanding. If it was expanding fairly slowly, the force of gravity would cause it to stop expanding and then to start contracting. However, if it was expanding at more than a critical rate, gravity would never be strong enough to stop it, and the universe would continue forever. This is a bit like what happens when one fires a rocket upward from the surface of the earth. If it has a fairly slow speed, gravity will eventually stop the rocket and it will start falling back. On the other hand, if the rocket has more than a certain critical speed (about seven miles per second), gravity will not be strong enough to pull it back, so it will keep going away from the earth forever. (i)
When someone takes away your ability to expand your own life, you are oppressed, controlled, and disempowered. You begin, as Hawking points out, to “contract,” that is, to shrivel and die. But when you are your own person, able to make your own decisions and follow your dreams, you can expand yourself and your abilities infinitely. Your desires and passions are similar to the rocket firing upward from the surface of this earth. If they are powerful enough, gravity will not be strong enough to pull them back. This, in turn, expands the world around you. Your dreams manifest!
The necessity of choice is why all our religious texts insist that God gave us “free will.” We must be able to make our own decisions in order to expand consciousness—to be empowered!
When you take away choice, you take away empowerment. When you think you have no choice, you disempower yourself.
Be certain, however, to pursue only what you really desire, or you’ll waste your time chasing things in vain. Gravity will pull you back down. You’ll feel your life contracting. Instead, follow what lights you up—by doing so, you’ll feel enlightened!
If you love singing and/or playing a musical instrument, stay open-minded when it comes to musical endeavors or opportunities. Maybe you aren’t going to be a rock star, but you might discover or create a career that invites you to play, produce, or teach music to others—if you’re open about your passion with yourself and with the people around you!
If you love reading or writing, make it a priority to do a little bit every day—all you need is a notebook and a library card. Today, it’s incredibly easy to start a blog, share your opinions, and continue to develop your writing voice.
If you love sports and athletics, find a program specifically geared toward the body: physiotherapy, physical education, nutrition, personal training, even biology.
If you love supporting, inspiring, and motivating others, a career as an empowerment coach may be right up your alley. Or even event planning or public relations.
If you love debating or speaking in front of people, join Toastmasters—there are meet-up groups all over the world; or even consider becoming a lawyer, professor, or philosopher.
Always remember, your desire is similar to that rocket firing upward from the surface of this earth. If your desires are powerful enough, there is nothing that will allow them to contract—or fail.
