How to Conquer the Battle Within
By Binu Alag
Have you ever felt like you were spiralling out of control?
I certainly have.
I sat on the kitchen floor, leaning against the dishwasher as tears streamed down my face. Pieces of broken dishes lay scattered on the floor. My three-year-old daughter stood about fifteen feet in the distance, staring at me. I noticed she was clutching her favorite blanket and sucking her thumb.
A loud, scary crashing sound had woken her up.
These anger spells used to hit me out of nowhere. I’d throw things, scream, and punch my kitchen counter. When I got like this, I became afraid of myself.
That evening, however, my daughter’s innocent little eyes just melted my heart. She was too scared to come any closer. She knew something was wrong. The moment she saw me crying on the kitchen floor changed me forever. This moment made me realize I had to do something about this battle within.
After my angry spells, I’d feel deeply guilty for my behaviour. That said, part of me knew that angry person was not who I really was. I’m generally a very happy, calm, and a positive person.
The more I thought about it, the more I realized I suffered from a battle within. There was the pleasant, angelic side of me, and then there was this horrible, diabolic side. I was so confused and lost.
It all came down to which part of my mind would run the show. I had to decide between a life of success and a life of struggle.
Now, I refer to this devil within I mentioned as my Inner Critique. It is connected to the amygdala, part of the brain located in the limbic system.
The Inner Critique is often the source of:
- Your body’s fight or flight response, which creates stress.
- It cannot rationalize consequences.
- It’s usually inflated with defensiveness and entitlement of – “I am right and you are wrong” mentality.
On the other hand, I refer to the angelic side of my personality as the Wisdom Master™.
The Wisdom Master™ control’s the prefrontal cortex of the brain. In addition, it is the source of:
- Creativity
- Rational thinking
- Decision-making
- Goal setting
- Planning & learning
When you allow your Inner Critique to take charge, it creates fear, anxiety, depression, irritating habits, and bad choices in life.
However, with your Wisdom Master™ in charge, you will experience happiness, success, a positive relationship with yourself and others, love, and a willingness to make empowered choices. With your Wisdom Master™ at the forefront of your being, you will find peace and harmony.
After a great deal of energy work and studying various modalities, I’ve learned to make peace with my Inner Critique so that it doesn’t run the show. Of course, it still makes an appearance from time to time, but I’ve mastered my relationship with it. Finally, my Wisdom Master™ is in control!
Over time, I’ve discovered that EFT tapping is a great technique to help send calming signals to the part of the brain that manages the stress response. EFT tapping combines the Easter technique of moving energy from the meridian points and Modern Psychology as a means of reducing the intensity of stressful reactions.
This technique brings profound results to help conquer the battle within.
