HOW EXERCISE ENHANCES SEXUAL PERFORMANCE
By Michelle Goldrick
Being this is the month for love, we all know the other obvious benefits to having a proper fitness and nutrition regime in place, but did you know it significantly impacts your rolls in the hay? Not only will regular exercise boost your sexual performance, but it also increases your desire for sex. Regular exercise encourages blood flow to the genital region, elevates the mood and keeps sex organs and muscles in better working condition. Not to mention carrying a toned body your proud of and worked hard for ups the self confidence levels.
So, a pre-sex work-out should be part of your foreplay! There is a proven direct link between sex and exercise. When you exercise, the brain produces endorphins that stimulate the release of sex hormones. These hormones reduce your heart rate, improve digestion, lower blood pressure and cortisol levels and relax the body. Oh, and you also might just feel primed and ready for a little one-on-one time in the bedroom. If your thinking about what body parts are involved the most (besides the obvious) ensure your program is focusing on strengthening the shoulders, chest and abdominals — all of which are active during sexual intercourse. Another area women particularly should focus on? Strengthening the pelvic floor!
Being I am certified in Pre and Post Natal Personal Training, this is an area I pay a specific amount of attention to. There have been studies that suggest that women with stronger pelvic floor muscles experience superior sexual function, and its so much more then just your Kegels listed in the pamphlet they sent you home with from the hospital.
We’ll touch on this more a bit later and how I incorporate them INTO your exercises in the gym. It has been said that women report more intense orgasms after regular pelvic floor muscle training. This involves work that engages the hips, psoas major and glutes in the form of hip thrusters, squats, deadlifts etc.
If you suffer poor libido it may be because having sex is just no longer as enjoyable as it used to be. And the reason could be very simple – a lack of intimate actual physical contact when you make love.
Every couple that has experienced the natural beauty of childbirth will have experienced the changes in the vaginal embrace after delivery. As ageing enters the picture, weakened muscles can further affect the enjoyment and performance.
Involving these exercises into your routine can improve the vaginal embrace and restore youthful inner strength. When you, and your partner, feel much more sensation then your sex life is MUCH more enjoyable.
Now back to the Kegel exercises. Kegel exercises are also known as pelvic floor exercises. These exercises are extremely effective in enhancing your sexual functions. It will strengthen your lower abdomen muscles, and will gradually improve your sexual functions.
These exercises are concerned with contraction and relaxation of your pelvic floor muscles. Some of the popular exercises that Kegels are involved into that can be done in the gym are bridges, wall squats, and jumping jacks. Do try these exercises for some months and you will experience the improvement in your sexual functions.
If sweating it out in the great outdoors or pumping iron in the gym sounds like the worst way to rev up your sex drive, there is good news: Sex is a workout. Spend enough time on foreplay and swapping positions, and you can torch as many as 100 calories over the course of a 30-minute session. During the act, you will experience an increase in metabolic rate, heart rate, muscle strength – and you may even relieve some stress.
There are countless benefits of exercise, and better sex just happens to be one of them. Next time you are considering skipping your workout, consider the impact it could have on your sex life – something you might deem worthy of going the extra mile.

I am a certified personal trainer with over 20 year’s experience in the fitness industry, with adding in some specialized certification in Pre and Post Natal Personal Training. Over the years I have helped many clients achieve and sustain their fitness and weight loss goals. This even needed to be applied to myself 5 years ago after gaining over 50 lbs with my pregnancy with my daughter. I’ve done 4 fitness shows with my last show placing 3rd in my class, and my 2nd last show 9 months after delivering my daughter. I got into this industry because of my genuine passion in helping people surpass their personal obstacles and improve their lifestyle, health and fitness level.
Most recently being a breast cancer survivor, diagnosed in September 2013 with mastectomy in December 2013, I now also understand the unique obstacles to overcome physiologically and emotionally that younger women with early age diagnosis go through. I have also since founded the breast cancer fundraising initiative playfully called “Bustin’ Out” in 2014. Which was designed to be an evening of empowerment for young adult breast cancer survivors. This is where survivors were given professional boudoir photoshoots after having their hair and makeup professionally done up for them. It was designed to give women their femininity and mojo back and to ‘rock what they’ve got’ and instead celebrate what cancer has given us vs what it has taken.
