Give the girl the right shows and she can change the world!
Nothing brings women from all walks of life together better than compassion and fashion. Stilettos for the Cure was founded on this principle three years ago by sole sisters Tamara McKee and Tina Dezsi, and it continues to ring true today.
What began as a low-key celebration of sisterhood has blossomed into a widely anticipated annual fundraising event supporting women’s charities in Durham Region. And if you love shoes, this is the place to be!
Not only is Stilettos for the Cure an annual high heel auction, but it is also a community-driven event. The support of sole sisters across the region has nurtured this “little auction” from a few pairs of shoes and 50 close friends to what has since raised $57,000, hosted nearly 1,000 people and auctioned off over 800 pairs of shoes. This is proof positive that a pair of shoes can change the world.
“Over the past three years, Stilettos for the Cure has featured shoes donated by ET Canada’s Cheryl Hickey, Dragon’s Den’s Arlene Dickinson, ETalk’s Tanya Kim, The Social’s Traci Melchor and Love It or List It’s (and The Bachelorette) Jillian Harris, as well as hundreds of women in our community,” says co-founder Tamara McKee. They have also enjoyed donations from several retailers including Town Shoes, The Shoe Company, Kandees UK, The Painted Sole, High Heel Junkie, Ju Ju Shoes, Fergie Footwear and many more.
Not to be outdone are the countless community businesses which have supported the event in the past three years. While the event unites shoe lovers from across Durham Region and the Greater Toronto Area, it would not be possible without the help of local businesses and dedicated volunteers. Stilettos for the Cure is highly motivated and determined to raise its highest amount to date in 2014 for their beneficiary, the Heather Griffith Breast Assessment Centre (HGBAC) at Lakeridge Health in Oshawa. The centre has services and programs that promote breast health, including:
- A mammogram (an x-ray image of the breast)
- A breast ultrasound (use of sound waves to create a picture of the breast)
- A breast biopsy (removal of a small sample of breast tissue)
- Appointment with a surgeon. Patients may be seen by a surgeon for the following reasons: abnormal mammogram, abnormal ultrasound, suspicious breast lump, bloody nipple discharge, positive core biopsy, complex symptomatic cysts, patient education.
- A Nurse Navigator. You can talk to a nurse navigator for support or information.
Stilettos for the Cure began simply as a ‘girls’ night out’ and has grown into a night to remember for anyone who has been affected by breast cancer. Your sister, your wife, your mother, your aunt and your daughter all benefit from the services offered at the HGBAC and your support is greatly needed.
Spare a Pair
Integral to Stilettos for the Cure is their annual Spare a Pair Campaign. “We ask that women look into their closets this spring and donate new or barely used heels for our silent auction. All proceeds from the auction support the centre and go to great use!”
