featured simply woman superstar - Anto Mannarino
By Crystal Andrus Morissette, founder of Simply Woman Magazine + The S.W.A.T. Institute
Our featured Simply Woman Superstar this week is Anto Mannarino.
Not only was Anto one of the few chosen authors in our Simply Woman: Stories from 30 magnificent women who have risen against the odds book, she’s also become a dear friend of mine.
Born with a rare blood disorder that requires her to receive blood transfusions every three weeks, Anto spent much of her childhood in and out of hospitals, sometimes feeling helpless and angry – something that in turn pushed her to become as independent as possible. In our book, she tells the story of being a tiny, eight-year-old little girl and her dad waking her up one morning to get ready for the hospital, but she didn’t want to go with him. She refused. He didn’t know what to do.
After he left her room, she grabbed her backpack and snuck out the door without telling anyone. Determined to get to the hospital on her own, she took a busy city bus and the subway all alone. When the nurses realized she’d come by herself, they called her parents in a panic. Yet, instead of worrying about being in trouble, Anto still remembers feeling the taste of independence and reveling in it—a trait that she now considers the cornerstone of who she is today.
She recalls being in her twenties, leafing through a health & fitness magazine during one of her blood transfusions, admiring some of the women’s well-defined muscles. After mentioning to her nurse that she would love to build big muscles and become an athlete herself, her nurse told her that would be impossible because of her chronic illness. Feeling hurt and then angry, Anto was determined to prove her nurse wrong. She literally took the word “impossible” and turned it into “I’m possible!”
Anto has not only become a weight trainer; she runs long-distance and plays squash (often against men!). She’s traveled alone, walking the Pilgrimage of Santiago de Compostela in Spain in 2017, and this past summer, traveled across Canada in an R.V.
Anto and I first met at a fitness expo four years ago, something she describes as one of her life-defining moments. I’m honored to know that with the help of my courses and one-on-one coaching, Anto has come to terms with her chronic illness and has dismantled the self-limiting stories and beliefs that she learned growing up.
“I now realize that my illness has given me great qualities such as resiliency, independence, and a passion for health and wellness,” she says.
Now, a certified personal trainer, women’s Empowerment Coach, and schoolteacher, Anto has channeled her struggles and triumphs to empower other women. She helps fellow patients with the same chronic illness through her social media wellness and support group; she hosts weekly Zoom meetings, encouraging members to share their feelings, thoughts, and concerns.
Anto currently lives in Montreal with her partner and two cats but has plans to move across Canada next summer to British Columbia, to start a Wellness & Resiliency Program offering retreats for women.
Be sure to watch our conversation on November 26th at 4 pm ET/3 pm CT/1 pm PT on Facebook Live, as we chat about empowerment, independence, and much more. Click here!
