Embracing Menopause: Become A Hot Flash Hottie, Go Fit Gals.
By PJ and Risse, The Go Fit Gals.
Menopause. It’s something that every woman will go through. Whereas puberty was the welcome party coming into womanhood, menopause is the gala towards wisdom, maturity and no more money spent on feminine hygiene products. Yippee!
Some women will welcome menopause, others will want to ignore it. Regardless of whatever camp you are in, your body will go through it.
The median age for menopause is around age 51 (Medical News Today), with the 3 to 5 years leading up to it called peri-menopause.
The medical definition of menopause is when a woman stops menstruating – marking the end of her reproductive period. But, if you are a woman in menopause you know firsthand that it’s a helluva a lot more than that.
Hormones – Where Art Thou?
Because of the fluctuations in hormones (estrogen in particular) the body starts to change. These shifts may include: weight gain, hot flashes, night sweats, pain during intercourse, increased anxiety or irritability, and the need to urinate more often.
Not exactly the “gala” and celebration towards this next chapter of our life that we were promised.
Creating a Healthy Body
One thing menopausal women need to remind themselves is that menopause is giving you a period of time to create the healthy body that you want for the rest of your life.
Food, fitness and stress management are all factors on this journey to better health and wellness. They are key aspects to habits that you can take with you to the grave (noting, of course, that we are on this road in the first place to stay above ground with vitality and zest for as long as we can).
At Go Fit Gals we know how to create healthy bodies. Collectively we have been coaching men and women get fit, get healthy and learn to love their bodies again for over 25 years. But while we never started our business with the menopausal women in mind, it became very apparent, very quickly, at how successful our 6-Week Shape Up plan was for women entering, or in menopause.
Hot Flash Hottie
However, we knew that we could do better. We knew that we could tweak our 6-Week Shape Up plan further and develop it SPECIFICALLY for the menopausal woman. The plan had to use food and fitness, not drugs, to help with the symptoms of menopause. It had to aid in re-balancing the hormones responsible for weight gain and it had to create lean muscle mass safely and effectively.
In addition, we also needed the recommendation and endorsement of someone who is in the trenches helping women during this period of their lives – enter the amazing Dr. Karen McGee.
Dr. McGee is a leading naturopathic doctor who specializes in women’s health issues. She knows what proper nutrition and fitness can do for the menopausal women, as well as other female issues like female cancer prevention and osteoporosis.
Regardless of whether you are ready to make a 6-week commitment yet with our Hot Flash Hottie Plan, we urge you to implement one healthy habit a week.
Menopausal Survival Tips
Add one tip below, once a week for the months ahead:
Drink at least 2 litres of water a day and add some lemon slices to it while you are at. Read tips here.
Do not eat past 8pm and eat breakfast a half hour upon waking.
Read your food labels and avoid crap (you know what crap is, no need to define here!)
Practice good sleep hygiene for a restful night’s sleep. Read tips here.
Add strength training to your workout regime. Read tips here.
Eat clean. (Read tips on our blog if you need support!)
Research has proven that we do not possess an infinite amount of willpower, so wellness is best achieved by creating habits.
That way at 9pm when your body starts guiding you towards the junk food drawer your brain, instead, will intercept and hit the herbal tea jar instead.
If you are a menopausal woman, or if you know one, please share this post with them. Our mission is to provide the guidance and the tools that they, or you, need to better health and wellness.
