You've got ten minutes to share what you've learned about life! GO!

A few days ago, I gave a short talk at a fabulous event called MoMondays; six speakers with 10 minutes each to share what they’ve learned from life.

A ten-minute talk is probably one of the hardest ‘speeches’ you can give. You need to position yourself as an expert but still connect on an emotional level with your audience, plus you want to inspire and leave a lasting thought, and you need to do it with the biggest bang or impact that you can.

Have you ever given thought to what you would tell an intelligent, empowered large group of people what you’ve learned about life?

You’ve got ten minutes, lights so bright you can’t see past the first row, and a good 400 people sitting in the audience, now Go!

What would you teach? What would you share? What are your life lessons? What matters most to you? What have you learned?

I knew I couldn’t get up there and tell them my ‘whole life story’ — it would take way too long.

Besides, it was the final event of the year; everyone was dressed up in their finest Christmas clothes; the energy was pure love in the air, and so I didn’t want to hamper all that happiness with stories of woe and victimization.

So, I kicked it off with these two facts:

  1. Family is horrible.
  2. Family is incredible.

They laughed. I knew this audience was here to ‘play’. Phew!

I told them the greatest gift you can give to your family and your relationships this holiday season is, to be selfish. That is, to Heal Your Self.

The greatest gift you can give to your community, your country, this world…is to Heal Your Self.

The audience erupted in cheers.

Who knew telling a large audience of fabulous people that being selfish was my life lesson? I didn’t even think I would say such a thing until it ‘popped out of my mouth’! (I lack a filter at times :O )

The truth is, the greatest gift you can give is to heal your Self.
