What Does Freedom Feel Like?
Written by Andrea Lewis
I posed this question in May of 2013. I remember it vividly.
I had been chasing my happiness in a man who I mistakenly believed was the “one!”
When I initially met him, my heart leapt out of my chest, his too, he later told me. There was something familiar about him and being with him felt like home.
Things moved rapidly and as if in a blink of an eye, the relationship ended abruptly when his wife returned.
Somehow he had forgotten to mention this minor detail, he was married!
However, I had ignored all of the signs and the whisperings then suppressed my feeling that I was not important enough to be told the truth. I hung on tightly to my belief that someday we would be together.
All the while I waited as if in a holding cell, imprisoned by my fear of being alone, I walked with invisible shackles around my ankles that kept me chained to this man I believed was the “one!”
Until my intuition spoke loud and clear!
My body shut down, I caught the flu and was bedridden with aches and pains. So I shifted my obsession and fixation to getting better ASAP.
I rested, took neo-citron, downed spoonful’s of Benadryl—treating the symptoms and not the real problem, my unhappiness.
Ah, the story of my life…
Hadn’t I learned that happiness is in inside job?
This insight had a calming effect and as I leaned into my physical and emotional discomfort I meditated on the word FREEDOM and asked SELF what does freedom feel like?
Then the answers arrived!
I was inspired to create a mind map, a mission statement, a life plan and a business plan. Within 2 weeks of completion, I knew in my gut what my life purpose was and I had a clear vision for the life of my dreams.
To my amazement, I got better then synchronicities happened.
The more I stepped into my life purpose—the more independent I became and the less dependent I was on the “one” to make me happy.
However, I still accepted his lies and betrayal…
Until many months later I heard my inner voice say, “You’re worth more than this.”
Then, I finally ended the relationship and continued my journey to empowerment. Placing one foot in front of the other, step-by-step I walked towards my life of freedom.
All I had to do was let go…
Of the “one!”
Of a specific outcome and just believe in myself.
Now, I am a Certified Wellness Coach—the first desire on my mind map. I also present my story to local high schools—the second desire on my mind map. I make time for creativity and have a spiritual practice—a few more desires on my mind map.
Though I may not have achieved all of the desires on my mind map, I’m happier than I’ve ever been in my life.
As I place one foot in front of the other, step-by-step I continue to walk towards freedom.
Won’t you join me?
Because it feels amazing!
To live without limits filled with love, peace and joy.
This is what freedom feels like.
