If you can make time for some great films that have the power to change and educate, these five films are at the top of our list for women to watch:

1. Girl Rising

Girl Rising is a film about the stories of nine girls from nine countries written by nine writers and performed by nine actresses. It is truly a short story collection, done as a visual masterpiece, and features the subjects in episodes of their own lives, giving us a window into girls around the world.

2. To Educate a Girl

Moved by the statistic that in 2000, 110 million children in the world were not in school—two thirds of them girls, two filmmakers Frederick Rendina and Oren Rudavsky traveled to Nepal and Uganda to study what it takes to educate a girl. To Educate a Girl is a look at the lives of young women who have dreams despite living in situations of conflict and poverty.

3. Invisible War

Truly shocking: a female U.S. soldier in a combat zone is more likely to be raped by a fellow soldier than killed by enemy fire. Invisible War is an investigative documentary about the epidemic of rape of soldiers within the U.S. military.

4. Half the Sky Movement

Half the Sky Movement is not a traditional 2 or 3 hour documentary, but a four-hour PBS series that shows women and girls in 10 countries living under the most difficult circumstances imaginable, yet fighting to change them.  The film is a call to arms to end the oppression of women and girls in the developing world. Inspired by the powerful book Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide.

5. Miss Representation

Last, and definitely not least, Miss Representation takes a look at the link between gender inequality in power positions in media, and how that perpetuates stereotyped gender roles in our culture. It is a compelling look at the under representation of women from media to politics, and a call to action for change, produced by Jennifer Siebel Newsom.
