Help Your Relationship Thrive, Even From A Distance
By Charolette Danzig
Though they often get a bad rap, nearly 60 percent of long-distance relationships are successful. This does not mean partnership at a distance is without challenges. Hours on the phone and love letters in the mail ultimately cannot make up for the intimacy that comes when you spend time face-to-face with your partner. No true love story is easy, but with a bit of planning and communication, you can make the best of a long-distance situation.
Make A Game Plan
Even if you’re not much of a planner, now is the time to brush up on those skills. First, be honest about how committed you are and the realities of the situation. Decide together if you believe your relationship has a shot at surviving long distance. Then, discuss your daily, weekly, monthly, or even yearly plan for your time together. Decide how often and through which mediums you and your partner will communicate. Talk through any necessary boundaries and be sure to check in with each other on these. Your plan will likely change as your relationship develops, which is a good thing.
Set Yourselves Up For Success
Relationship quality is not ultimately determined by geography. Rather, it’s about building up face-time with your partner in a way that helps you both grow. The travel decisions you make now will help you find success in your long-distance relationship. Set aside enough cash to purchase plane tickets or pay for routine vehicle maintenance so that, when it comes time to visit your partner, you’ll be ready to go. If you know you’re heading into long-term long distance, now might be the time to search for a reliable car to get you through. Nothing is worse than engine trouble on a solo cross-country road trip to visit your partner. Having bits of time in between the distance will give you something to look forward to and a bit of reprieve from missing each other.
Consistency Is Key
Regardless of how you run your long-distance relationship, do your best to keep things consistent. From daily text updates to monthly visits, a little bit can go a long way. If you know you are in it for the long haul, don’t forget to continue nurturing your relationship at a distance. Now is not the time to take your partner for granted, but lean in and develop doable, consistent ways to show your love and appreciation.
Long-distance is usually no one’s first choice when it comes to relationships, but with a bit of effort and a lot of love, you can make it work. You might even find you and your partner grow closer together during this time. Either way, long distance is worth a shot with the one you love!
