5 ways women won at the 2014 golden globes

Here’s an exciting thought: Maybe women are making some progress in North America. After all, would you have seen 2 women hosting an awards show (other than a beauty pageant) 10 years ago? My only internal struggle here is, why do I still ooo and aaaah over the award show dresses and sparkly things? Then again, maybe it’s okay to dress up in fancy frocks if you kick butt like the examples below.

Here are 5 ways where we might have won, just a little, at this year’s Golden Globes.

1. Tina Fey: a strong, beautiful woman who can hold down a stage and keep the audience on their toes. Intelligent, confident, comfortable in her own skin, extremely funny and not afraid to take big jabs at ageism, sexism and other important issues we face which are simply magnified in the hollywood scene. Tina’s line, “There are still great parts in Hollywood for Meryl Streeps over 60,” was a particular standout.

2. Amy Adams stood up for the importance of motherhood when the music began drowning out her acceptance speech for Best Actress in a Comedy for American Hustle. “You cannot play me out of talking about my daughter.” You tell ’em, Amy. It doesn’t get more assertive, confident and grounded than that.

3. Amy Poehler is not afraid of smashing tradition firstly for a good laugh and secondly, causing us to question, “Yeah, why DO we put only young girls up there to stand silent in a pretty dress?” After Kyra Sedgewick and Kevin Bacon introduced their daughter Sosie Bacon as this year’s Miss Golden Globe, Poehler came out as Randy, Fey’s “adult son from a previous relationship” and this year’s Mr. Golden Globe. Score one for gender equality.

4. ‘Frozen’ wins Best Animated Film. The movie has been called “the feminist fairy tale we’ve been waiting for,” and has not one but two strong female leads. It passes the Bechdel test with flying colors. Girls. Rule.

5. Heroic Women of 2013. A Bing commercial airing during the show celebrated the heroic women of 2013. This awesome commercial paid tribute to some of the most inspiring female figures in recent history like Diana Nyad, Gabrielle Giffords and the always-close-to-our-hearts Malala Yousafzai. Maybe there is hope for big money media?

Did you watch the Golden Globes? What stood out for you?
